Aardvarks Take Down the Guerrillas and Stay Unbeaten

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH: Week 5 Power Rankings

1. Aardvarks (4-0)

Last week: (3), W vs Guerrillas, 71-67

The Aardvarks stand as the last undefeated team after their win over the Guerrillas and a loss by the Rebels. This battle of the unbeaten was a close contest from start to finish and the Aardvarks came out winners thanks to a standout performance from Adam Hoven, who lead the team in points (21), rebounds (11), and assists (6). Chris Kampmeyer shot 64 percent from the field on the way to 15 points. They lead the league in points per game (84.0) and shoot a league-best 53 percent from the field.

2. Rebels (3-1)

Last week: (2), L vs Muskies, 74-80

The Rebels faced a hot-shooting Muskies team in Week 4 and picked up their first loss of the season. They came into the game averaging 52.6 points against per game, but allowed the Muskies to score 80 in Week 4. Offensively, they shot 48 percent from the floor and had just 5 turnovers. Ryan Jansen led the scoring effort with 22 points and Cody Heinz added 18 points with only three missed shots. The Rebels lead the league in points against (59.5) and steals (8.3) per game.

3. Guerrillas (2-1)

Last week: (1), L vs Aardvarks, 67-71

The Guerrillas suffered their first defeat of the season in a tight game against the Aardvarks. It was a four-point margin despite the Guerrillas not having their best shooting night, connecting on just 39 percent of their field goals and 29 percent of their 3-pointers. Bryant Marmol led the team with 20 points and Dajon McKnight contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds. They had 17 assists in Week 4 and lead the league averaging 19.3 assists per game.

4. Muskies (2-1)

Last week: (4), W vs Rebels, 80-74

The Muskies were in rhythm with their outside shot in Week 4 and handed the Rebels their first loss of the season. They connected on 13 3-pointers in the game at a 57 percent clip and hit some big shots down the stretch. Sonny Young-Graves led all scorers with 25 points and made five of his seven 3-point attempts. Glen Fair led the team with 9 rebounds and added 17 points. The Muskies are third in the league in points (73.7), but last in points allowed (77.0) per game.

5. THEM (2-2)

Last week: (5), W vs Lightning, 68-65

THEM squeaked out a close victory over the Lightning to get back to .500 on the season. They were highly efficient shooting the ball inside the arc, connecting on 63.8 percent on those shots, but made just 20 percent of their 3-point attempts. Devin Stensrude is averaging a league-best 25.8 points per game and led the team with 21 points and had a team-high 3 steals. Sam Hanson contributed 17 points while shooting 73 percent from the floor. Their 68.5 points per game ranks fifth in the league.

6. Loons (2-2)

Last week: (7), W vs Player’s Club, 70-62

The Loons picked up their second win in a row after defeating the Player’s Club in Week 4. They shot 46 percent from the floor, but just 26 percent from beyond the arc. Defensively, they held the Player’s Club to 39 percent shooting for the game. The Loons racked up 15 offensive rebounds and that was a big factor in the win. Walt Richard scored 19 points to lead the team and Aaron Lukitsch connected twice from downtown on the way to 17 points. The Loons are second in the league in points allowed (62.5) per game.

7. Player’s Club (1-3)

Last week: (8), L vs Loons, 62-70

The Player’s Club dropped their third game in a row after they started the season with a W. They couldn’t find their flow on the offensive end and shot just 39 percent from the field for the game. They struggled on the boards too, allowing 15 offensive rebounds by the Loons. Tony DeBoer led the team with 23 points and connected on four 3-pointers. Steven Kelsey added 16 points on the offensive end and had 2 steals. The Player’s Club rank fifth in the league in points allowed (67.5) and fourth in steals (6.8) per game.

8. Free Agents (1-1)

Last week: (10), W vs Red Devils, 57-55

The Free Agents picked up their first win of the season in a defensive battle against the Red Devils. They shot 46 percent from the floor while holding the Red Devils to 36 percent from the field, but the Free Agents had 12 turnovers on the night. They also had an edge in the rebounding department, gathering 12 offensive rebounds in the game. Vernon Simmons led the team with 14 points while Howard Lucas hit four 3-pointers for 12 points off the bench. The Free Agents showed marked improvement from their Week 3 performance.

9. Red Devils (1-3)

Last week: (6), L vs Free Agents, 55-57

The Red Devils couldn’t get their shots to fall in their Week 4 loss. As a team, they shot 36 percent from the field and 24 percent from beyond the arc. They forced 12 turnovers while turning the ball over just four times themselves, which kept the game close, but they couldn’t overcome a poor shooting night. Aaron Zietlow scored a team-high 17 points and also led the team with 9 rebounds. Eric Lois added 16 points and a team-high 3 steals. The Red Devils are second in the league in steals (8.0) and sixth in points allowed (67.8) per game.

10. Lightning (0-4)

Last week: (9), L vs THEM, 65-68

The Lightning were close to grabbing their first win of the season, but couldn’t close it out down the stretch. They showed improvement on the offensive end, shooting 51 percent from the floor and connected on seven of their 15 3-point attempts. Chuck Harvey ignited the offense with six triples and finished with a team-high 18 points. Jake Gave finished with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. They rank ninth in points (61.0) per game, but showed life on the offensive end in Week 4.
