Sari Papzian has started 2020 on a scoring tear

Papazian

I’m not sure if Sari Papazian made any New Year’s resolutions, but if he did, my guess would be it was to dominate UH Atlanta with extreme efficiency.

That’s a little vague, but if that was his resolution, he’s absolutely crushing it right now. He is playing in the Alpharetta Draft League and Atlanta Open League this season, just like he did last season, and he’s on an absolute tear.

Before I get to Papazian’s stats early this season, it’s important to note his career stats of 20.9 points with shooting percentage splits of 52/44/82. Those are great scoring numbers, especially because they’ve spanned over 100 games.

That context is needed to fully appreciate the hot start he’s had this season. Papazian is a consistent scorer, whether that’s in the Atlanta region or at national tournaments (where he’s averaged 16.4 points on 50% shooting from the field and 40% from deep), he can always get buckets. He’s turned that up a whole level for this season, as he’s averaging 35.5 points and has shooting splits of 60/45/89. That’s over the course of four games, which his teams have gone 2-2 in, in two different leagues.

So far his lowest scoring output of the season was 22 points in an 81-80 loss in Atlanta. That game also featured his worst shooting performance, as he shot 7-15 (47%) from the field and 1-8 (13%) from deep. In every other game this season, he’s shot 57% from the field and 50% from deep or better, putting up 35 or more points.

This season’s averages are 14.6 points higher than his career average, and his shooting percentages have all increased. It might be unrealistic to expect these numbers to continue over the course of 16 games through both leagues, but he’s on an exceptional run so far.
