The Power Of Inclusive Play In Youth Basketball
John and I were invited by Playworks, the leading national nonprofit leveraging the power of play to transform children’s social and emotional health, to see their "power in play" demonstration this morning at Bancroft Elementary School in Minneapolis.
The game demonstrations are used for educators to create new and unique play opportunities for their students to play.
It was inspiring to learn how we can continue to change the culture of youth basketball by Playworks' core values of inclusion, respect, healthy play and a healthy community. With the "win at all costs" mindset infecting youth sports, leading to high "retire" rates amongst young players, this play elixir is sorely needed.
We believe what Playworks believes. One of our core values is a Professional Playground, a playground which is fun, energetic, safe and inclusive for everyone. Isn't that what we want for all kids playing basketball today?
