WOODSTOCK: Playoff Power Rankings

By Kyle Sandy | Woodstock League Coordinator

Playoff seeding has been finalized and the post season is here. Which teams are riding momentum and look poised to hang a banner?

1. TEAM 4 | 7-1

Behind star guard Harrison Stewart, Team 4 enters the postseason on a six-game winning streak. In the regular season finale Team 4 held off Team 1 69-63 with Stewart dazzling with 23 points (5-6 3PT), 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Austin Fellows came up big with 17 points and 9 rebounds while Sam Bresnick chipped in 14 points. Team 4 goes as Stewart goes but seeing Fellows and Bresnick pick up the slack is a positive sign and will be integral to their potential postseason success.

2. TEAM 3 | 6-2

Reggie Thompson returned to form in Team 3’s 83-68 victory over winless Team 6. The wired-to-score wing dropped in 27 points to pace the attack while PJ Stone had an efficient 16 points and 6 rebounds. The return of veteran Mike Hattub paid dividends as the spark plug finishing with 11 points (5-7 FG), 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. He brings another savvy presence on the perimeter with big game experience.

3. TEAM 5 | 3-5

I’ve been saying it for three weeks now: Nobody wants to see Team 5 in the playoffs. After an 0-5 start, Team 5 has ripped off three straight wins as Matt Norton has elevated his play to the next level. Team 5 upset Team 2 80-74 with Norton dropping 33 points and going 6-9 from the 3-point line. He got major help from Taylor Birchett, who pumped in a season-high 27 points for the second consecutive week while adding 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Both Norton and Birchett have high usage rates. A third scorer will need to emerge to take some of the burden off their shoulders.

4. TEAM 2 | 5-3

Justin Patterson caught fire from deep, going 5-10 from the 3-point line to finish with 24 points while Michael Corkrum assaulted the rim and tallied 24 points and 10 rebounds, but Team 2’s lack of guard play hurt them in an 80-74 loss to Team 5. Without a true ball-handler to get them into sets, Team 2’s offense revolved around deep Patterson 3s and Corkrum drives from the high post. A lack of a defensive stopper on the perimeter could hurt their chances when they see teams with quick guards.

5. TEAM 1 | 3-5

Team 1 pushed Team 4 to the brink but fell short 69-63. Four players finished in double figures with TJ Russell leading the way with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.  Brandon South and Chris Williams each netted 14 points. Pirooz Jallali had a nice game with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

6. TEAM 6 | 0-8

Julian Stewart put on his cape for a second straight week and tried to play Superman, piling on 30 points and 8 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a win. Kurtis Greene Jr. tallied a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds as Team 6 out-rebounded Team 3 44-33 but shot just 1-18 from deep.
