Devyn-James Harrell: "Chris Paul is a bum"

Devyn-James Harrell has played in 128 career UH game across Roseville and Folsom. He works as a media associate in the Roseville league and helps put it together each season. He’s a big fan of Trevor Mcghee, Hip-Hop and MTV’s The Challenge, among other things.

If you could only wear one basketball brand the rest of your life, which brand would you pick?

Harrell: See, this question is difficult, if we are talking shoes, I’m an ADIDAS guy, but factor in clothes and I’m leaning towards NIKE.

What is the first R-rated movie you saw in a theater?

Harrell: I remember it like it was yesterday, it was summer break before senior year, we went to see “Waist Deep”. This was the peak of what you could call my childhood obsession with Meagan Good. Needless to say, I was definitely not disappointed.

Who is the most overrated player in the NBA?

Harrell: Easy, at this point in his career, Chris Paul is a bum.

What kind of music do you listen to before a game? What about after a win?

Harrell: The genre has never changed, since my younger years it’s been hip-hop before a game, always. I love my throw backs so a lot of Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne and Wu-Tang on the pre-game playlist. You’ll find some Future, G-Eazy and Kendrick Lamar mixed in as well. After a win however, that’s a different story. I stick to R&B, a lot of acoustic songs, I’ve battled with injuries throughout my youth and even more so as an adult so I’m typically hurting after most games and just want to wind down and relax. Some go-to artists are Dermot Kennedy, Summer Walker, DVSN and Arin Ray.

If you could be on the cast of any TV show, which one would you be in?

Harrell: Okay, so I’m going to kind of separate this into genres because I really don’t think I could pick just one. If we’re talking comedy, its Brooklyn Nine-Nine hands down. Drama would have to be Power or Game of Thrones. Reality television would be MTV’s The Challenge; I would kill to be on that show and they couldn’t handle me.

Which NBA player (active or retired) would you want to fight the least?

Harrell: I’ll engage in trash talking with anyone but I’m definitely not instigating problems with Ben Wallace, no thank you.

Who is the best fictional basketball player of all time?

Harrell: I’m a bit partial in my answer as Finding Forrester and Love and Basketball are two of my favorite movies of all-time. So I’m going 99’-00’ Rookie of the Year status and choosing co-award winners with Monica Wright and Jamal Wallace.

Who is the most underrated player in Ultimate Hoops?

Harrell: This is a tough one because I’ve seen first hand for several years now the impact a lot of these valuable role players have on winning teams. While I’d love to show one of them some love, I just find it borderline disrespectful the lack of attention Trevor Mcghee in Roseville gets. I’d say that even with multiple MVP’s and multiple championships that Trevor McGhee, for whatever reason, still doesn’t get the credit he deserves. The development in his game over the years is rivaled by very few. This guy wins on good teams, wins on bad teams, he just shows up and gets it done. The only knock on Trevor is whether or not he shows up mentally to each game. He is most certainly the most underrated player on a national spectrum.

Who is your dream dinner guest (dead or alive)?

Harrell: Zoe Saldana. I have my reasons.

What NBA player would you compare your game to?

Harrell: In my younger years, Rip Hamilton and Glen Rice. As I’ve grown older and much more out of shape, I think Mike Miller, Antoine Walker, Jim Jackson and Pistons Rasheed Wallace are pretty fair comparisons. Although last season was pretty comparable to that of OKC Melo. I don’t live in a bubble, coming back from a broken foot my game was atrocious.
