Guy Pistone pulls a "J.R. Smith" to help Team Classic pick up OT win

Guy Pistone will want to forget last night as quick as possible.

After a back-and-fourth overtime period, Garrisson Duvivier made a layup to put the Warriors up 88-87 with 14.6 seconds left. Team Classic went down and put up a shot that got tipped back out to Anthony McDaniels, who inexplicably held on to the ball, despite his team trailing by one.

“I honestly thought our teammate Anthony McDaniels was going to be the J.R. Smith of the game since he was holding the ball as if we were up,” MetroWest League Coordinator, and Team Classic player, Taylor Pettiford said. “Thankfully, Guy bailed us out.”

The strange decision (intentional or not) by McDaniels led Pistone to foul him with 2.1 seconds left. McDaniels buried both free throws to put Team Classic up 89-88. Pistone heaved up a desperation 3 at the buzzer but it didn’t fall, dropping the Warriors to 0-3 this season.

It was a gritty win for Team Classic, who were missing three starters last night, forcing them to play with five players for the entire game. This put an offensive burden on Pettiford and Mychal Parker, something they handled with no issue.

They combined to score 74 of their team’s 89 points, shooting 26-48 (54%) from the field and 17-30 from deep (57%). The also combined for 22 rebounds, eight assists and six steals, making up for the absence of three starters.

“Our role players had to step in and play a ton more minutes than they’re used to,” Pettiford said. “they did the dirty work and let Mychal and I go to work.”
