Upcoming milestones to look for in the Winter 2020 season
The Winter 2020 season is set to start this week, and there are plenty of milestones that will be reached over the course of the three months before the spring comes. Here’s a look at 10 milestones with a good chance of being reached at some point this season.
1. Christian Bower has played in 293 career games. He needs seven to reach 300 games played, which would also make him eligible for the Hall of Fame. Bower routinely plays in multiple draft leagues in Arizona, so if he’s able to play consistently, he’ll likely reach 300 games before the halfway point of the season.
2. Juan Carter currently has 795 steals. His career average of 1.7 steals per game puts him on pace to reach 800 steals in three games. That would make him the 10th player ever to have 800 career steals.
3. Chris Frey has 966 assists, making him 34 away from joining the 1,000-assist club. His career average is 4.5 assists per game, putting him on pace to get past 1,000 assists in his eighth game this season. He should be able to pass that mark right before the playoffs if he’s able to play every game in the regular season.
4. Hollis Hale has made 1,970 career 3-pointers, putting him 30 away from becoming the fourth player to ever make 2,000 3s. He averages 5.5 3-pointers made per game, so he’s on pace to reach the 2,000 mark by his sixth game this season. Hale may play in one league or up to three in any given season, so who know how fast he’ll get to 2,000, but there’s no doubt he’ll get there this season.
5. Ahmed Helmy is on the brink of two milestones this season. He currently has 398 wins, putting him two away from becoming the 10th player in UH history to win 400 games. Helmy has a career winning percentage of .637, so it shouldn’t take too long for him to reach that mark. He’s also made 980 3s, putting him 20 away from 1,000. He makes 1.6 per game, putting him on pace to get to 1,000 in his 13th game this season. If he plays in Bloomington South and Fridley, that shouldn’t be an issue. If he only plays in one league, he could reach that mark in the playoffs.
6. Jason LaPlanche has made 986 3-pointers in his career. If he sticks to his career average of 4.1 3s made a game, he would get to 1,000 in his fourth game this season. He will likely play in multiple leagues, so this milestone should be reached fairly quickly.
7. Chris Maher is close to becoming the second player in UH history to grab 5,000 rebounds, as he currently sits at 4,973. He averages 7.8 rebounds per game, which puts him on pace to reach 5,000 by his fourth game this season.
8. The only player that currently has over 5,000 rebounds is Mike Mastro, who has two milestones he can likely reach this season. One he will for sure reach is 9,000 career points, as he’s only nine points away. Mastro played in 20 games last season and scored fewer than nine points once. He has won 289 games, and he’ll likely get to 300 wins before the playoffs start in March. He usually plays in two draft leagues, and he will be playing in the Syosset Vet League for the first time this season, so there’s a chance he’ll be playing in three leagues. He has a career winning percentage of .747, so he should be able to get there in 15 or so games.
9. J.J. Todd is 25 blocks away from joining fellow UH Vegas veteran Travis Scribner as the only members of the 1,000-block club. He averages 2.8 per game, which puts him on pace to reach the exclusive club by his ninth game this season. If he plays consistently, he would be able to reach this milestone by the first round of the playoffs.
10. Sonny Young-Graves has played in 795 games, putting him five away from reaching 800 career games. Ryan Jansen is the only person currently with over 800 career games, so this would be a massive milestone to reach. Young-Graves consistently plays in Bloomington South and Fridley, so he should be able to accomplish this in a few weeks.
