Bryant Marmol surpasses 10,000 career points in back-to-back wins for the Guerrillas
The Guerrillas had a great night in the Bloomington South Rec-Plus League last night. They were scheduled to end their regular season on a back-to-back, facing Ball.Life and their biggest rivals, the Rebels. If they won both games, that would secure them the top seed out of Bloomington South heading into the combined rec-plus playoffs.
Ironically enough, the rec-plus format allows each team two college-experience players, and the Guerrillas played both games without their two college talents: Travis Johnson and Derek Hamner. It didn’t seem to matter, as the Guerrillas won both games to secure that top seed, cruising to both victories. They blew out Ball.Life 117-64 and followed that up with an 85-71 win over the Rebels, giving them an average margin of victory of 33.5 from the two games.
To add to their accomplishments last night, long-time Guerrillas guard Bryant Marmol came into last night’s back-to-back with 9,974 career points, needing 26 to get to 10,000. He ended up scoring 16 against Ball.Life and then 13 against the Rebels, giving him 10,003 career points and making him the eighth player in UH history to ever surpass 10,000 points.
It’s fitting that Marmol reached this milestone against the Rebels, a team the Guerrillas have faced 41 times over the years. It maybe adds to the significance of the milestone for him, especially since it came in a win.
It’s also notable to point out that this game was the 900th career game played for Ryan Jansen, which unfortunately came in a loss. This makes him the first player in UH to ever play in 900 games. Jansen also just passed 10,000 career points last week, and Marmol is now 34 points behind him on the all-time scoring list.
This now sets up the Guerrillas in a good position, as they are on a seven-game win streak and they just edge out Total Blend for the top seed in Bloomington South due to a head-to-head win back in Week 7. They were the top seed out of BLS last season as well, and they rode that all the way to a championship game appearance. We’ll see if they are in for a similar fate this season.
