Mastro proved the critics wrong with his All-Tournament play this past weekend
With our eighth Ultimate Hoops National Tournament complete, we now have time to look back on the weekend that was, starting with our All-Tournament Team.
G | Richie Byrd – RTG (NY)
Byrd was a strong tournament MVP candidate despite his team not finishing off their Cinderella run. Byrd led the tournament in total points (120) and was sixth in assists per game (4.2). An exceptionally smooth player, Byrd will be a player to watch when/if Syosset decides to bring a team to Las Vegas in May. [PPR Rank #8]
G | Julian Stewart – Trust The Process (PA)
Like many on this list, Stewart dominated his team’s stat sheet, leading the team in points (15), assists (4.5) and steals (2.0) per game. Stewart was his team’s most efficient scoring threat (50% FG/40% 3PT), and while a disappointing semi-final game almost knocked him off this list, his pool-play performance was too much to look past. G | Tunde Ogunleye – FMB (NY)
I was certain of FMB’s eventual championship until they ran head first into the Bulldogs of RTG. Ogunleye led a stacked & balanced roster in points (63) & assists (13). Despite their semi-final exit, FMB and Ogunleye will be remembered for their dominating performances all weekend. [PPR Rank #9]
F | Michael Mastro – RTG (NY)
Michael Mastro proved me, and others wrong with a performance worthy of respect [12.4/10.2/3.0 on 54% shooting]. A constant among the leaderboards in Syosset, Mastro has now put himself firmly into the top-tier of players nationwide. This comes as no surprise to those in Syosset, where Mike has already won 12 championships. [PPR Rank #3]
F | Carlos Valdez – Thundercats (NY)
Valdez was a monster all weekend, leading the Thundercats in 4 of 5 statistical categories while never taking a rest. Because his stats don’t “WOW” you, it’s hard to categorize what Valdez meant to this team without watching him compete. A constant trash talker who always backed it up. He pulled down timely boards and dished out more assists than anyone on the weekend. With his performance, Valdez has thrust his name into the UH lexicon among the likes of Paris Kyles and Dermaine Crockrell. [PPR Rank #14]
6th Man | Tony Eackles Jr. – Las Vegas Unknown (NV)
Eackles Jr. sneaks onto this list with the top PPR performance of the tournament. He led the weekend in PPG with 23.8 while shooting 54% from the field and 43% from deep. Las Vegas Unknown wasn’t deep enough to make a run but did get massive performances from Eackles [PPR Rank #1] and Reggie Jackson [PPR Rank #4].
