Is Zach Andrews Single-Game Rebound Record Legit?
Each week, we search through our 360 media coverage to highlight the week that was in Ultimate Hoops Leagues.
Player Spotlight
Our player spotlight is a controversial one this week. On Monday night, Zach Andrews grabbed 50 rebounds in the Tempe open league in a 103-87 win for Game Over. This set a new Ultimate Hoops record for most rebounds in a game. This made it easy to spotlight Andrews, but there are some problems with the record. Andrews shot 0-20 from the field in the game, and 24 of his 50 rebounds were offensive rebounds. This makes it look like he was playing volleyball off the backboard and racking up easy rebounds to break the record. If that's the case, so be it, the record is his. Chris Walker was a guest on the Ultimate Hoops Podcast this week, and he said that Andrews legitimately got 40-plus rebounds, while he may have padded the stats to make sure he got to 50. At the end of the day, the record belongs to Andrews after he got 50 rebounds in a game his team won. Count it as another accolade for Andrews, the 2015 National Tournament MVP for Ball So Hard.
Milestones
Kerry Knoll surpassed Mckinsey Golfin, the all-time leader in points for UH, in made threes last season. On Thursday night, Knoll made four threes in a win for Hickory Huskers in the Green Valley vet B league. The fourth made three was his 1,900th in his UH career, putting him 52 ahead of Golfin as of Friday afternoon.
Izzy Elkaffas had four rebounds in a win for Fob Five in the elite eight in the Fridley playoffs on Thursday night. This helped him surpass 2,500 rebounds in his career, as he now sits at 2,501. Only 33 other players have ever grabbed over 2,500 rebounds in their UH career.
Lavell Jones played in two playoff games in the Arizona State Tournament this past week. The first one he played in was his 200th in his UH career. This now officially makes him eligible for the Ultimate Hoops Hall of Fame. The nomination voting has concluded for this year's class, so Jones will have to wait until 2019 if he wants to get nominated.
