Latrell Love's game-winner gives Downtown a double-overtime win over Straight Shooters
Latrell Love is having quite the impressive rookie season in Bloomington South.
He is averaging 26 points and 8.4 rebounds (with 4.4 of those coming on the offensive end) while shooting 57% from the field and 38% from deep. He’s helped Downtown to a 3-3 record , and last night he was the biggest reason why they were able to get back to .500 this season.
He had 33 points and nine rebounds on 13-21 shooting in the win, but it was the final play of the game that makes the headline.
With 56 seconds left in double overtime, game tied at 71-71, Downtown inbounded the ball and purposely wasted a bunch of time. They passed the ball around the perimeter a little, but for the most part, Jason Covin and Love stood with the ball near half court, with no one from Straight Shooters applying any pressure.
They ran the clock down to eight seconds before Love got the ball into his hands to make a move. He hesitates for a couple seconds, then attacks his defender with 5.5 seconds left. He crossed to his left, took two dribbles into the arc and then shot a step-back jumper from 14 feet that dropped with one second remaining. Straight Shooters couldn’t get a shot off on the ensuing inbound play and Downtown was able to hold on for a 73-71 win.
