The Bricklayers prove to have an ironic team name after Week 1 victory

I’m a fan of self-deprecation, especially in rec basketball. You have to know your skill limitations sometimes, so calling your team the Bricklayers is a perfect way to set the expectations low.

You might be expecting a team with that name to shoot 30% from the field each game, but they had an impressive offensive output in their Week 1 84-73 win over the Stallions in the Burlington Draft League.

The Bricklayers shot 45% from the field, which is good, and 18% from beyond the arc, which is not good, but the individual scoring of each player is the real feat. They only had five players in attendance, and each player scored 10 points or more. They were led by Terrell Hollins, who had a dominant performance of 30 points, 21 rebounds and four assists.

The scoring output was rounded out by Tim McCarthy (18), Gabe Debarros (14), Sean Kelly (12) and Chris Frissore (10).

The Stallions had some impressive offensive performances as well, as Michael Ingram-Rubin and Chris Nicolas combined to score 47 of the team’s 73 points. They were much less balanced than the Bricklayers, as no other player scored more than eight points. They were missing Tommy Hubbard, a member of the 2019 All-UH Team, so that was a significant disadvantage for the Stallions.

The Bricklayers are unlikely to be this balanced throughout the season, as playing with five players forces everyone to attempt to contribute offensively. Everyone on the Bricklayers took at least nine shots, and when they have all eight players in attendance, that won’t be possible. It’s at least nice for the Bricklayers to know that they have players capable of scoring when forced into that role.
