Arinze Obiora has taken MetroWest by storm
Arinze Obiora has only played in 14 career UH games, but he’s already established himself as one of the premier players in all of UH Boston.
He’s been consistently good over the course of those 14 games, including the three games he’s played this season, and he’s coming off his best performance of the season thus far in the MetroWest Draft League. In an 80-75 win over Buckets Galore, Obiora put up 31 points and a career-high 21 rebounds while shooting 12-17 from the field, 3-6 from deep and 4-4 from the free-throw line.
When Taylor Pettiford asked Obiora which NBA player his game resembles, Obiora said, “Kawhi mixed with a little KD, because of my length, but mostly Kawhi Leonard.”
That is a lofty comparison to make, as those two account for the past three Finals MVP trophies, but when you look at Obiora’s numbers, the comparison doesn’t seem that far-fetched. He has averaged 27.7/14.3/4.3 with shooting splits of 51/42/87 this season, leading Stampede to a 3-0 record in games he’s played in (they fell 80-74 to Team Classic in Week 1, the only game Obiora has missed this season).
Winning is something Obiora is used to, as he went 9-2 with the Black Widows in his debut season back in the fall. They lost two games by a total of six points, including the championship game, which they had to play without Roland Millien, who averaged 21.2 points and 10.4 rebounds last season. In Millien’s absence, Obiora had 24 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists on 9-15 shooting.
This all adds up to Obiora averaging 25.1/11.9/5 with shooting splits of 51/36/74 with a 12-2 record in his career thus far. He’s already proving to be one of the better players in UH Boston, and in a season where some of MetroWest’s elite players are sitting out, Obiora has a real chance to take over MetroWest and possibly lead Stampede to a league title.
